TX REGULATIONS & COMPLIANCE
What carriers running Texas need to have in order. This is general guidance, not legal advice — but it's the checklist our dispatchers work from with you.
Intrastate authority (TxDMV)
Carriers hauling point-to-point inside Texas need TxDMV intrastate motor carrier registration (TxDMV number) in addition to a USDOT number. Interstate-only carriers running Texas lanes operate under FMCSA authority.
Weight limits & permits
Standard limit is 80,000 lbs gross, 20,000 lbs single axle, 34,000 lbs tandem. Texas offers annual and single-trip oversize/overweight permits through TxDMV; port-area carriers commonly run the 84,000 lb port permit on designated routes.
Texas IFTA & IRP
Qualified vehicles over 26,000 lbs crossing state lines file IFTA quarterly through the Texas Comptroller and register apportioned plates under IRP with TxDMV.
Annual inspection
Commercial vehicles require an annual DOT inspection; Texas also enforces the federal periodic inspection standard at roadside and at fixed weigh stations along I-10, I-35, and I-45.
