Intrastate authority (NCDOT / NC Utilities Commission)
Intrastate for-hire carriers register through the NC Utilities Commission and hold an intrastate USDOT number; household goods and passenger carriers face additional filings.
Weight limits & tolerances
80,000 lbs gross standard. North Carolina allows a limited tolerance on axle weights for certain agricultural and forest-product loads on non-interstate routes.
Highway use tax
North Carolina charges a Highway Use Tax on vehicle title transfers instead of a traditional sales tax — a real cost item when a carrier buys a truck in-state.
NC IFTA & IRP
Both are handled by the NCDMV International Registration Plan section, with quarterly IFTA returns and annual decal renewal.
